Wunderarts gallery on Main Street is having an "Out of Sight" exhibit of "accessible" abstract art.
I'm off to Thailand in a couple of days. I was chagrined at first to read my itinerary carefully for the first time and discover I would have a 15- hour layover (from 3:55 a.m. to 7 p.m.) in Incheon Airport outside Seoul, Korea. Then I read that Incheon was recently named the best airport in the world by the travel research outfit Skytrax, based on a survey of 8 million travelers. According to the author of "Why can't all airports be like Incheon?" travelers with long layovers can book tours of Seoul and upscale hotel rooms for six hours at a time -- and there's a Korean spa open 24 hours a day with private sleeping rooms. Truly brilliant! There's also free wireless, so I'll report back.
Hester, napping by an open window. She may be the most popular one at AboutAmherst, but Brian is the first to get a request to try out for a TV commercial. Here's a recent email from a Park Avenue casting agency:
Hi Brian,
I am a commercial casting director with Donald Case Casting, Inc. here in New York (www.donaldcasecasting.com) and I am working on a project that calls for a real, professional Entomologist. We are doing some research on people in the field and came across your name on Amherst's blog. If you think you fit the bill and are up to audition for a TV Commercial we would love to have you. Details below...
Thank you so much for your time and help with this project! Here are the details....
We are casting a commercial for TERMINIX and looking for a real Entomologist to be in the spot.
Our Entomologist can be male or female, any age, but must be a real Entomologist.
We are having auditions this week (the week of 6/29) at our office. You would just have to come in and be put on tape reading some lines.
Then, if you get the job the commercial will shoot on July 15th in NYC and you will be paid for the shoot (a little under $600 for the day as per SAG with the potential to receive more money in residual payments depending on how the commercial airs).
If you are interested you should give us a call at 212-889-6555 for more details and to set up a time to come in and audition.
Again, thank you so much for your help.
My best,
Rachel Silver

We got this wonderful Thank you note from Trevor Marcotte, this year's recipient of a scholarship in my late mother's and father's name at Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton, where my dad was the football team's doctor for many years. (I included this photo of them with a picture of the note.) Trevor says he was a tailback on the team and plans to study physical therapy at Springfield College. "This is a great honor to receive this award and I will not let you down," he writes. I say it's an honor to receive such a great note!
Snapped this today on North East Street.

Your Thailand experience will be extraordinary! Can't wait to read about it! And while you're away, Brian may turn into a TV star.
Isn't life amazing??
Bon voyage!
Thanks for all of your encouragement, Stephanie. Hope you get a chance to get away too!
May the new adventure on which you are about to embark fufill your expectations.
When you are in that far away place remember that you are loved even when you are alone, that there is a sun even when it does not shine, that there is a God even when he is silent. (I find comfort in that saying.)
Best,
"Momma"
Thanks, Momma. I love keeping in touch with you all via the wondrous Internet. (I hope the sun does shine, though, even though it is the rainy season.)
I wish you a wonderful time in Thailand, and that Korean spa sounds like a great beginning of the adventure. Keep us posted, please.
How about Brian? Did he try out for the job? That would make great blogging material.
Have a safe trip!

I googled Terminex just to see what they are about and if they include any nonchemical controls too, and they have all sorts of lawsuits against them for breaching contracts, etc., so I gave this one a miss....
